, ,Position Overview:
SMART Technologies is on a transformative journey to become a truly data-driven company. To accelerate this transformation, we’re seeking a strategic, engaging, curious, proactive, innovative and collaborative results-oriented Senior Manager, Enterprise Data and Analytics. Reporting directly to the VP, Business Transformation, IS & Data, this senior role is pivotal in reimagining and enhancing our data function. This strong leader will build upon foundational efforts underway, ensuring that data is accessible, trustworthy, reliable, and strategically leveraged to enable overall business effectiveness, agility, and competitive advantage.
You will lead and build a talented team comprising a Senior Data Solutions Designer, Senior Data Engineer, Intermediate BI Developer, and Data Business Analyst. Your ability to inspire, empower, and a build high-performing team will be critical in establishing a modern, scalable, and resilient data platform for SMART Technologies. The ideal candidate is a visionary leader with a strong technical background and a proven track record of delivering impactful data solutions in a fast-paced environment through their team.
Key Responsibilities:
Data Strategy and Leadership:
- Lead and evolve SMART’s data strategy, establishing robust, scalable, modern approaches that deliver real-time, reliable, and business-relevant data insights.
- Leverage your proven methodology to set clear priorities, identify and pursue strategic opportunities, and drive continuous improvement in our data maturity, processes, and effectiveness.
- Provide vision and direction in the advancement and execution of data initiatives, enabling data-driven decision making, predictive analytics, AI, and business intelligence.
Data Services Management:
- Oversee SMART’s data ecosystem to ensure high-quality data availability, integrity, consistency, and reliability.
- Establish, enhance, and manage a modern data architecture aligned with industry best practices, utilizing cloud infrastructure, data lakehouse concepts, and real-time data integration tools.
- Proactively identify and remediate risks, technical debt, and architecture gaps to ensure sustainability and agility.
- Manage, and prioritize user stories on the Azure DevOps (ADO) board, ensuring alignment with business priorities. Collaborate with stakeholders to refine and prioritize backlog items, enabling efficient execution of data and analytics initiatives.
Team Development and Leadership:
- Apply proven approaches to build, grow, and maintain a high-performing data services team.
- Coach, mentor, and empower direct reports, fostering continuous professional development, accountability, and team excellence.
- Define clear objectives, KPIs, and career growth pathways for your team, promoting a culture of innovation, collaboration, ownership, and results.
- Lead with adaptability and resilience, effectively managing change during significant business transformation. Champion a data-driven culture that thrives in evolving environments, ensuring the team remains agile and aligned with shifting business priorities.
- Oversee budgeting, financial forecasting, and resource allocation for the data function, ensuring cost-effective investments in infrastructure, tools, and talent. Continuously optimize spending while maximizing the business impact of data and analytics initiatives.
Stakeholder Engagement and Communication:
- Build strong relationships and actively collaborate with business leaders across SMART Technologies to deeply understand business objectives, define requirements, and enable strategic priorities.
- Present and communicate effectively to senior leaders and stakeholders, clearly articulating the business value of data strategies, investments, priorities and outcomes.
- Act as the primary advocate, evangelist and thought leader for data-driven insights and approaches within SMART, fostering data literacy and adoption throughout the organization.
- Establish and lead a cross-functional Data Working Group, focused on enhancing the interoperability, alignment, and consistency of data across SMART Technologies. This includes defining and implementing standards, common vocabularies, and frameworks that ensure data quality, trustworthiness, governance, and seamless integration across systems and processes.
Innovation and Collaboration:
- Stay abreast of industry trends, emerging technologies, and best practices in data, data science and analytics.
- Foster a collaborative environment, encouraging knowledge sharing and cross-functional connections to drive innovation and maximize impact.
Compliance:
- Ensure compliance with data privacy laws and standards (GDPR, etc.), establishing robust data governance frameworks to protect company data assets and privacy.
- In concert with SMART’s Legal team, manage data privacy, security, and ethical standards across all enterprise data activities.
- Leads and enforce data governance best practices, ensuring data integrity, security, and consistency across the organization. Establish policies, standards, and frameworks for data management, collaborating with business and technical teams to drive accountability and trust enterprise data assets.
Vendor and Partner Relationship Management:
- Proactively develop, foster, and manage strategic relationships with external vendors and partners.
- Oversee vendor engagements, contracts, SLAs, and performance, ensuring alignment with SMART’s business objectives, quality standards, and strategic outcomes.
Qualifications & Experience:
- 10+ years of progressive experience in data management, data strategy, data architecture, or related roles; minimum 5 years leading data teams.
- Demonstrated success designing, implementing, and continuously enhancing modern, scalable, and cloud-based data architecture (e.g., data lakehouse, data warehouse, cloud SaaS data integration tools, real-time data platforms).
- Extensive understanding and experience with modern data languages, tools, and frameworks such as SQL, Python, DBT, Snowflake, Sigma, Power BI, ETL/ELT automation tools (Fivetran, Informatica), and cloud ecosystems (AWS & Azure).
- Proven track record developing data strategies and managing successful enterprise-scale data initiatives that deliver clear business value.
- Demonstrated experience leading, coaching, and managing high-performing data teams that produce dramatic results while maintaining strong team dynamics.
- Strong business acumen and the ability to clearly articulate data’s value proposition to technical and non-technical stakeholders alike.
- Exceptional communication, interpersonal, and presentation skills, with the ability to engage and influence senior executives and cross-functional teams.
- Experience managing external vendors and partners, negotiating contracts, and maintaining productive, strategic vendor relationships.
- Self-starter, strategic and strong leader, with the ability to establish OKRs, KPIs, milestones etc. to keep projects and their team on task.
Working conditions
- Office-based role (in Calgary), fast-paced work environment, occasional ability to work remote is a possibility
